Stick It to Depression: Dr. Alex Joannou Brings Revolutionary Acupuncture Training

With 40 years of experience in the medical field, Dr. Alex Joannou is creating a team of professionals trained in acupuncture to assist in the management of depression.

The World Health Organization has declared that depression is the leading cause of ill health and disability worldwide. An estimated 280 million people suffer from this condition. Depression has a massive impact not only on the sufferers but also on their families, work colleagues, and society in general.

Depression is so common and can have a devastating effect on people and their loved ones. “I felt a total lack of joy in my life. I wanted to cry for no apparent reason. I felt a total loss of confidence. I felt like a failure. I felt shame. I felt defeated. Is this all there is to life?” These are common statements by people with depression.

Dr. Alex has created Transformational Acupuncture International to train acupuncturists to literally stick it to depression in the management of this pervasive condition but also to become valued members of the health team that helps in the treatment of depression.

Dr. Alex Joannou has been a GP for 40 years now. He has also been a qualified acupuncturist for 24 years. The suicide of a friend twelve years ago motivated him to develop a system of acupuncture to help the depressed and anxious. As a result, he has witnessed countless patients improve. Now, his focus with his new organization is to teach his methods to acupuncturists around the world to help the vast number of people with this problem.

Transformational Acupuncture International

The organization by Dr. Alex aims to teach health practitioners in fun and interactive workshops and by utilizing software to demonstrate how acupuncture can help transform people’s lives. Transformational Acupuncture is a new turn in the acupuncture world because there are not many practitioners who focus on mental health, and nowhere near enough to help the vast numbers of patients with depression and anxiety.

Dr. Alex’s method of dealing with mental health with acupuncture incorporates knowledge from the two ancient, adjacent cultures of China and India, using the traditional Chinese understanding of acupuncture to manipulate the Hindu Ayurvedic chakra system to work holistically at the level of body, mind, and spirit. Transformational Acupuncture is an adjunct to drug therapy and counseling and gives doctors another tool in their doctor’s bag.

Dr. Alex Joannou MBBS (Hons) FACNEM, has learned much about the human psyche in his 40-year medical career. With over 300,000 patient consultations, including performing over 35,000 acupuncture treatments, Dr. Alex has witnessed firsthand the complex interrelationship between the mind, body, and spirit.

“In my opinion, acupuncture is an effective and safe adjunct to current treatment for depression.” – Dr. Alex
